How and Why to Sell your Used CPUs(Processor): A Step by Step Process

In this computer era, we are using different types of computers and servers that belong to various generations of CPUs that function as your IT hardware’s heart. These are the real driving force behind your entire IT infrastructure.

But with the advancements in computing technology and Large scale integration (LSI) and also due to the evolution of technologies for the creation of Computer processors for specific purposes, all your recently purchased Computer or Server processors become obsolete or become less useful to you, compelling you to upgrade your computer systems for extra functionalities and keeping yourself updated with the emerging technologies.

The real problem with disposing of these CPUs is that they still have useful life left in them, and hence it is a waste of precious resources just to throw them as scrap to landfills. As these processors are made of many heavy metals and hazardous chemicals, disposing of them by dumping them in the landfill is very dangerous to the environment as the core material contained in these pollute the water and soil and becomes one of the most dangerous things for humanity.

These CPUs with their useful life can be used again in other systems, and as such, they can fetch better value when disposed of through IT assets disposal companies who can find these CPUs a secondary market where they can be put to use again.
These CPUs are the most costly component of computer systems. They rarely get damaged or go out of order; they can be easily reused again and again with different computer systems and can be used till the end of their lifetime, offering useful service to other persons.

Due to this, the CPUs can be sold again to the IT Assets Disposal companies that follow a systematic way of clearing the CPUs from your premises and find the best possible market to reuse them. This prevents the CPUs from becoming scrap materials and unscientific disposal that adds pollution and contamination to the environment.

So, if you want to dispose of used and unwanted CPU units, call your ITAD company and let them take your CPUs and pay you a substantial amount of money back so that you can get back a sizable portion of the amount you have spent for purchasing these CPUs that you want to dispose of now.

When the time has come for you to upgrade your existing computer systems and want to dispose of your unwanted CPUs, consider all options and call your ITAD company and let them take these units and pay you the amounts as per the market rates for the used computer markets. Do not forget that your CPUs are the most vital and valuable parts of your computer or server hardware.

Here, we are going to give you the right strategies you need to follow in disposing of your CPU units and getting the best possible price for them besides allowing them to be reused in the secondary market. You should know which is the right time to sell the CPU as well as know-how and to whom you have to sell it.

Many factors govern the plan you need to implement to sell those unwanted CPUs, and the deciding factor is the CPU usage in your company. Whether you have only one CPU or many CPUs that you want to sell now, by following a well-thought-out and carefully implemented ITAD plan, your company will be able to realize the best advantage by selling the used CPUs at the best possible prices.

Decide the time of your CPU Sales:

The Processors in your CPU are the most basic as well as the brain of your Computer system, and you need to decide to sell them only after due consideration of various factors. Important among them is the reason for selling the computer processor and what you want to do with the system after selling the CPU.

Most of the time, the CPU’s disposal comes into play either due to an upgrade or due to a malfunction. If it is due to an upgrade, you should be clear about the technical specifications for the new processor that is going to replace the current one and the ability for it to offer the benefits you want to get from it.

Why sell your Used Processors:

Some of the reasons for you deciding to dispose of the CPUs and replace them with another one may be due to:

• The CPU not able to handle the workloads intended for your computer or server and cause throttling of network speed even though the processor is running at 100% of its efficiency
• The new processor will offer a considerable amount of enhanced levels of increased virtualization
• The present CPU has become outdated with no support for virtualization
• To increase the power efficiency per unit
• To consolidate older servers into new units for saving on space and maintenance aspects
• New processors have already been installed, and the old CPUs are no longer in use

Before starting the ITAD process for disposing of your old used CPUs, be convinced of the advantages you are going to get by way of enhanced computing power or upgrade in the quality of service by way of process improvements. Also, you must be aware that substantial performance gains cannot be achieved by merely upgrading to new generation processors.

But with careful planning and selection of the right processors for your use, along with upgrading of other components of your computer system like upgrading to 8th generation from the 7th generation is sure to give a big boost to your processing performance. For instance:

The overall performance of the 8th Generation processors was better than those in the 7th generation as can be seen from the fact that an 8th Generation Core i7 processor was found to give 14175. Another processor of 8th Generation with Corei5 spec gave a performance level of 14158. In contrast, that of a 7th Generation Core i7 processor gave 8735 while that of Core i5 belonging to the same 7th generation stood at 7391 performance level.

Thus, there is a clear enhancement of doubling the performance level with the upgrade to the next generation ( 7th to 8th Gen) of the Processors.

But when key differences between 6th Gen and 7th Gen were analyzed, it was found that there is only a marginal increase in the performance levels when the upgrade is done from the 6th Generation to the 7th generation of processors.

The native features of the 6th Gen successor including 4K video support, improved 3D graphics, and faster clock speeds might be appealing to gamers and multimedia junkies, but they aren’t of much use to the general public.

If you are an individual, except in cases of more specialized computing needs like intense gaming, cryptocurrency mining, etc., there is not much need to upgrade the computer processor often, and there is not going to be any marked improvement in performance as can be noticed by the user by upgrading the processors and CPUs.

Decide on to whom to sell your Used CPUs

When you want to dispose of the used CPUs, the real ways of doing it are very limited, and you need to consider many factors that will make it appropriate for you to sell them with the possible advantages. Some of these vital points include:

• Whether the CPUs you want to sell is in working condition
• How much time have they been working on your computer system?
• How many Units do you want to sell now?

Consider these points in the light of how valuable the processors you want to sell, are they functioning now and, how much benefit you got from them, how much value you can get out of their sale, and how much money you have to spend to bring in the new upgraded CPUs and how much performance enhancement you can get out of them.

If you have many units of CPUs to sell, you can call in your ITAD partner or your ITAD Company with whom you are maintaining an ongoing business relationship and get them to take charge of the disposal of the CPUs. If you have very few units or a single unit to be disposed of, then the ITAD people may not show much interest unless you have other equipment along with the CPU for disposal.

In case you have only a few or a single CPU, you can try to sell them on eBay or by on Hardware Swap and get a better deal.
But if you sell your CPU on sites like Craigslist or other websites that show interest in dealing with used IT equipment or sold directly to another company or an individual, you should be very careful in planning the entire transaction and take all steps to protect your payment as most of the persons who are active on such sites are scammers.

Where to sell the CPUs that are not in working condition

The resale value of the damaged or not running CPUs depends more on the processors’ age and how much damage they have suffered. It will also depend on the number of processors you are offering for sale. If there is only minor damage, then you can try to repair them and sell them with a careful calculation of how much the repaired Processor is going to bring in against the amount of money you have to spend for repairing them.

In practice, it is seen that if you have more than 10 to 15 processors will attract good demand even if some of them are not in running condition, and these will be taken for extracting scrap metals. If there are 50+ processors for sale, then you can contact your ITAD Company who will be interested in setting right the damaged ones and reselling them later in the secondary market. This will fetch you more value for your old CPUs.

How to Sell your CPUs or Processors

In case you want to sell a limited number of processing units on eBay or Hardware swap, you can sell them on these channels as like any other product. Here are some broad guidelines you need to follow

• Research to find out the right price point and spend as little time as possible to complete the sales process
• know what is important for you in the transaction and choose the sales channel accordingly
• Know the conditions for sale if you are new to that sales channel and adjust your price accordingly.
• Always try to sell in public places and for cash only so that you can avoid scammers and manipulators
• Take a good picture of the unit and interact with the buyer based on that image.
• Take steps to inform your buyer what you have with you and what you expect to get to complete the sales as soon as possible.
• Never use websites which to do business with someone you do not know or trust. Those websites are good for transactions between friends and do not offer all the user protections.
While posting your Information of the CPUs, you want to sell create a post or a short article with the following information like

• The model number, batch number, and year of manufacturing of the unit
• The number of units available
• The present condition of the unit, namely new, used, in the original packing, damaged, broken, etc
• The extent of damage and the probable cause of damage and whether it can be serviced or not

How to create the right packing for the CPU

When you have to sell the CPU to an ITAD company, and they require you to pack it and send it to them, pay more attention to the CPU’s packing so that no damage occurs during the transport. If a unit gets damaged in transit, it will lead to unwanted and unavoidable complications between you and the buyer, so pay more attention to the packing of individual or high-value items by following these tips:

• Wrap the processor in some form-fitting box to prevent accidental damage due to impacts during transport
• If possible double cover it with a box inside the box and cover it with bubble wrap or padding
• Pack tightly inside the container and stuff with suitable materials so that the unit is not able to move inside the box
• Protect the contents of the box even if it is thrown or kicked while in transport
• For larger consignments, use rigid trays to withstand the impacts during transit

Thus, follow what is stated above to safely and securely sell your CPUs so that your used CPUs can bring in the best value to you and get the opportunity to be reused or recycled in a proper and environmentally friendly manner.
